I actually liked this as it allowed us to skip the front desk and settle into our room. We stayed in the Henry Rufoote room on the top level. Really nice and comfy. Only complaint would be that the shower was tight for tall folks. Beautiful views and plenty of wraparound porches to sit and relax. Definitely would stay again. While we didnt stay for breakfast, it looked great!"

"Extremely Surprised by this Establishment - I typically prefer large chain hotels, so First Colony Inn was a little out of my comfort zone. From check in to check out, they exceeded my expectations. The staff was very friendly, the Inn, despite it being a historical building was exceptionally clean and it gave a homey vibe, while still having modern amenities, like keyless entry. Breakfast was staggered since there was a smaller dining area, but having a set time slot for breakfast was actually great for our family, to get us started for our day. We loved the location and easy access to the beach. The only thing I did not like was leaving!"

Elegant but not pretentious, First Colony Inn embodies an era of hospitality, leisure, and charm that's all but forgotten among the hotel chains and cookie-cutter vacation rentals of today. Fortunately, First Colony Inn is alive and well, serving as home base for an Outer Banks vacation the way it was meant to be enjoyed. The staff were all so kind and helpful, breakfast and the social hour were fantastic, and my room was comfortable and clean with a nice view of the ocean. The grounds have an air of peace and seclusion, but the beach is only steps away and there's plenty to do within walking distance or just a few minutes of driving."

My room on 3rd floor (no elevators) was good size with lovely framed prints of maps and wild life, comfortable bed, arm chairs and desk. The small library on the 2nd floor provides a quiet place to read and work. My only real critique, although it always seems a nice touch to have a coffee machine in one's room, they make the worst coffee."

"What a great hotel, with a VERY interesting history! Situated just one block back from the beach, with direct beach access this is an intriguing hotel. The many rooms are named after the lost colonists, that simply disappeared back in the 1500's (I think). There is also a great story of how the hotel was moved to it's current location. Our room was on the 3rd floor. It was clean, comfortable and very quiet. Even though we had neighbors we never heard them. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, and thee afternoon drinks and canaps a nice touch. There are a few restaurants within walking distance but for me the location for dining was so so. The Wright Brothers memorial was about 5 minutes drive, as was Jeanette's pier. Everything else is a bit of a hike. Not a deal breaker but, because we flew in and did not have a car a different location may have worked a little better. In saying that if the beach is what you want you will be happy as Larry! They do have bikes and beach chairs for use, which was a very nice touch. Overall this is a really nice property with beautiful surrounds."

"Exceptional - It was our first time travelling to Nags Head. We contacted the property prior to arrival regarding our booking. The staff was very helpful and went out of their way to try to accommodate our room requests. The beds were extremely comfortable and the rooms were spacious and clean (a definite plus after many hours of travel time)! There was also a desk in each of our rooms which was helpful for our daughter who needed to complete some remote schoolwork. A delicious breakfast was included with our stay and we appreciated the attention to scheduling that the property took to ensure guest safety. Each party was assigned a specific dining time to minimize capacity. During breakfast a staff member even took the time to answer our questions about the property and its interesting and rich history. We mentioned that we had to check out very early the next day and would miss breakfast and we were given homemade muffins for our trip. A kind gesture! The grounds were beautiful with hammocks, bikes, interesting sculptures and gardens and it was a short walk from the back grounds of the building to the beach. We wish we could have stayed longer and our family would return to this property in the future as it was a great location in Nags Head that checked all the boxes for us-clean, comfortable, near the beach and a family friendly location. There isn't much we didn't like. Our bathrooms both had pedestal sinks which made it a little difficult to do hair and makeup for an event we were headed to. The office is closed in the evening unlike a traditional chain hotel. However, the staff can be contacted in the event of an emergency."

"Amazing. Will be back! - This place is phenomenal. I adored the vintage vibe and beautifully maintained grounds. I love that the rooms have small kitchenettes, the bikes and ample seating throughout the property that really let you enjoy the sun. Literally everything was gorgeous and only a stones throw to the beach. My one concern was the bedding. The bed wasn’t too bad but the pillows were so hard that I woke up with a cramp in my neck. The pillows were just not comfortable."

I wish the pool had been open, but it was too early in the season and the inspection had not yet been done. Access to the beach was easy and the beach was beautiful. The staff were incredibly helpful and responsive. We would definitely stay here again. Really nothing. The inn and its staff are exceptional."

I did not want to get up each morning. The only secondary icee of puzzle was breakfast. This may be due to Covid but we were last shift in dining room each morning and food was never hot. "Exceptional - I loved the beach access path that I used every morning to watch the sunrise from the beach. It was an amazing experience and will miss doing that after my trip. I enjoyed the daily breakfast and social hour treats and wine; the staff were very friendly and my room was very comfortable and I had a very relaxing, deep sleep each night (except for the last night of my stay due to the family next to my room #1). Perhaps the hotel should consider booking families with small children on the first floor but not next to a solo traveler such as me who was trying to get away for rest, relaxation, restoration and peaceful sleep. But overall, I loved staying at First Colony and plan to return on my next trip to the OBX. The last night of my trip, the family next door were very noisy and loud after 9:30 pm when I was trying to get in my evening meditation on my last night at this amazing place. The family were screaming and yelling, banging things against the wall, their child screaming and crying. They finally stopped right before 11 p.m. People are so rude and inconsiderate of other travelers who are on vacation and trying to have a peaceful night, peace from their day to day lives. People who can not control their children and respect the noise rules should stay home or be charged additional fees for the inconvenience of others."

As an older building, you can hear people walking above you or outside. The rooms don't have curtains, so it can be quite bright in the morning."

If you have an issue with noise, bring ear plugs. You can hear the traffic outside, but it makes sense because this inn was once in front of the ocean so that was ideal. Otherwise nothing. When we checked in, the warm hospitality given to us was instantly a home run - the staff was so friendly and excited to have us ... the personalised print out of a welcome letter and the wine bar was spot on after a five hour drive from! The room was amazing, with plenty of room we had a separate day bed for our son and so well decorated, the antique furnishings were a definite charm! The breakfast was amazing, it was really well presented, the food was delicious and just the right amount and most importantly the young lady serving us was just so precious and kind - she really took great care of the family and had such a wonderful attitude! When we misplaced my wife’s wedding ring, they all took such great care of us, help us search the entire place until we found it - all that extra hard work from the staff and they all kept a positive attitude! They had the breakfast down to a science (and it was a much enjoyed hot breakfast along with great coffee), wine in the afternoons which included different appetizers. They have a library on site, no charge for their bicycles (nice bike path for use), private walkway to beach which was never crowded and a pool. We enjoyed the multiple sittings areas and the garden. We stayed in the Richard Kemme room (16) which had two doors. Enjoyed the extras--heated towel rack , jacuzzi tub, Green Mountain coffee, porch swings. Also, hand sanitizer, masks and social distancing was commonplace and much appreciated. Thank you First Colony Inn for providing us with peace of mind during these challenging times. Absolutely nothing. All 6 nights were great!"

"A beautifully maintained B&B - My family truly enjoyed the clean, conveniently located B&B. We stayed for one full week. The hot breakfast was awesome. Every morning, the breakfast provided was different from the previous morning’s breakfast and really delicious. The staff members were all very professional and they were doing an excellent job keeping the facilities sanitized during the COVID-19 pandemic . It also has its own private entrance to a beautiful beach and there is a very nice pool on the property. It’s close to the National Shoreline and the other attractions in OBX are only a short drive away. We loved it! Everything was perfect"

I enjoyed using the swings on the patio to watch the sunset. The room was exceptionally clean. For a visit in off-season, it was still busy, yet cozy. Because of the older building, there is exposed pipes. It's not an issue unless you're interested in something modern. I had trouble getting the television to work, but was able to restart the modem and get it working. Also, the breakfast nook is quite crowded. Be sure to get there early. The breakfast served wasn't my taste, but the other guests seemed to enjoy it."

"We would definitely go back! - The only thing that was wrong was that we were originally given a small room with a queen bed when we thought we had reserved a large room with a king bed. We went to the desk to complain, and were told that sometimes 3rd party bookings get jumbled. Not good. However, we were given a room that was even better than we thought we had reserved, with a Jacuzzi tub. Good! The guy that helped us with the room also gave us wonderful restaurant recommendations, and provided cookies when we arrived a bit late to the "afternoon tea" He more than made up for the original snafu. The place is nice, and clean. Wifi worked well. The library is interesting and nice to have. The breakfast was okay to good. Best thing about this inn are the wide wrap around porches, so comfortable and relaxing when your goal was to sit on a rocking chair and do nothing at all. Breakfast was good, different hot items for the two days we were there. Afternoon wine and snacks were even better than we remembered. The private beach, although not right off the property, was just across from the road and uncrowded. Rooms come in different sizes, some bigger than others, and porch access is easier if you are on first and second floor as there are none on the third floor."

"Quaint Historic Inn - We enjoyed a much too brief overnight stay at the Inn. The staff was very pleasant and warm, we felt at home immediately. We arrived a little early and were able to check in. This was extra nice since our stay was so short. Our room was on the 2nd floor with a beautiful view of the grounds and just a bit of the ocean. The veranda had rocking chairs, hammock swings & plenty of seating to just relax and enjoy the view. The complimentary happy hour was an unexpected treat and we enjoyed a glass (or 2) of wine with the view. Our room was tastefully decorated with furniture from the era, including a sitting room with comfortable wing back chairs and love seat. If we would get the chance, we would definitely visit for a longer time. "

"A charming historical near the shore. - I really wanted a stay that was not a "box" hotel. First Colony Inn was just the place. It is on the historical registrar having originally been built in 1932. There is no elevator, so if you don't like stairs, get a first floor room. The climb is well worth it though. The rooms have a " homey" feel. The room was not really fancy, but it was comfortable and cool. It reminded me of staying with family. The Inn served breakfast and afternoon snacks; both were very good. The beach is just across the road, and the hotel has its own access. The grounds were absolutely lovely with flowers everywhere. Porches wrap around all of the floors and afford a wonderful place to sit. There is also a lovely patio in the back. If you are looking for an "out of the box" option for a lovely vacation in Nag's Head, this is definitely the place to go. Many wonderful memories were made during OUR stay. "

"Wonderful stay! - Am very familiar with the Outer Banks having visited for many years during the summer months and staying either oceanfront or soundfront. This was a Fall visit and the First Colony Inn was a perfect location due to easy access via a designated boardwalk across the beach road and free parking accessed from the bypass. An added bonus was the free bikes available. The mattress could use an update, but didn't keep us from a restful sleep. Can't wait til next Fall for a return trip."

"Our regret is our stay was too short - My Sweetheart and I are on a grand tour of North Carolina, visiting the mountains and the coast. We stayed in 5 hotels in 5 nights and booked this room on the way to the Outer Banks. We read "historic inn" and saw the pictures - from experience this could either be a good thing or bad. We figured, "What the heck?" If it was horrible, it was only one night. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! We arrived after dark as the charming desk clerk was closing shop - he was leaving us a note and the keys and greeted me by name! (And he pronounced it correctly, too). The room was charming and comfortable. We rocked on the rockers, strolled down the path to the private entrance to the beach, and enjoyed visiting with total strangers in the breakfast room. The room and the experience were a steal at this weekday price, and we truly regretted we had to move along the next day. We dawdled - not wanting this to end too soon. The only negatives (very, very minor) was the size of the TV screen and the underwhelming breakfast. Since our return home, we've been telling everyone they need to stay here for charm, ambiance, and close access to everything enjoyable. Although we don't typically stay the same place twice, we're already talking about our next visit here."

"Best place to stay in Nags Head - We had never been to the OBX and we had a couple of days without the kids so I decided to surprise the wife. Not knowing where to stay and only having a couple of days to spend, I knew a house was out and needed to find a hotel or B&B. After much deliberation and research, I booked the First Colony Inn. It was highly rated, had a B&B feel and was close to the beach. That and it was pretty centrally located so we could explore the OBX in the short time we had. This inn was very clean and well maintained. Even though the hotel wasn't right on the beach, it was just a short walk across one street to the beach. Complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas made it easy to go. The pool area was very clean and refreshing. The afternoon happy hour with snacks and complementary wine was also nice. At night, the room was well air conditioned and very nice. The bathrooms were sized nicely and we enjoyed the bubble bath in the jetted tub followed by the complementary robes. Breakfast was also very good with a good selection of breads, cereals, pastries and of course the main dishes which varied daily. We had quiche one day and biscuits gravy and eggs the next. The staff was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about this historic inn. This place was cool with alot of history from the area and unique charm that you only get from a B&B/Inn. I wouldn't have traded it for the hotel across the street which was very, well...hotel like. I'd recommend this hotel for anyone."

"Lovely weekend at the beach - My husband and I spent a lovely weekend at this Inn. The location is great, right across the street from the beach which is accessed by a private boardwalk. The hotel is close to many restaurants and shops you can walk to. "Very Nice Quaint Hotel - I knew when I booked this hotel that is was a "Bed and Breakfast" type hotel. It was better, because the rooms were next to each other like in a hotel (your own room you could lock and leave a do not disturb sign, etc.). But the hotel still had that Bed and Breakfast feel. The room was filled with antiques, huge king sized bed with a lace/crocheted canopy top and very comfortable. It also had a day bed if you wanted to bring a child. There was a beautiful huge Wardrobe where you hung your clothes, a sitting area to read your paper or be on your computer (Wi-Fi had excellent reception), a desk AND a mini kitchen with a small fridge, microwave and a Keurig coffee maker. It was beyond our expectations. The "Winter" rate through Expedia was $95.00 a night, a great value, plus they provided breakfast every morning in the Bed and Breakfast style. I couldn't find anything wrong with The First Colony Inn". Oh, did I mention it was very quiet and we knew other guests were there because the parking lot was full. A five star stay!!!"

I guess if I had to complain about something it would be that the TV's are 17" or 19" and need to be upgraded to a larger size. The only way to watch TV was from the bed which was about 15 feet away. I spoke to the Desk Clerk and they were planning to upgrade to a larger TV...just don't know when. We also ate dinner at Miller's across the street. We are planning another trip in the near future and will stay here."
