"We have stayed at the Castle twice, once in their smallest room and one in the biggest (The harbor room sleeps 4 comfortably!) The inn/motel options in Ocracoke can be tricky. Lots of old, lots of run-down - rough around the edges. The Castle has a history and a great old-school vibe, rooms are all different and so charming- lots of slanted roof lines and cozy nooks and corners. Yes it is quirky but that's what makes it such a good choice. Parking is easy, location is amazing, great views from the decks, great little pool, bikes you can borrow anytime, GREAT BREAKFAST!!! We were on island with 7 families all in different spots and we were the happiest with our stay. They manage to make a reasonably priced stay and not feel cheap or jenky. The staff is SO SO SO nice and you feel like you can come and go and it feels private even with the common space. The Castle seems to draw a really wonderful crowd, no rif-raf or loud partiers, just great people looking to enjoy the beach and the harbor."

"My sister and I stayed for a week at The Tar Heel Motel. The contactless check in and check out process was easy and convenient. The information sent to me was timely and easy to follow. The room was clean and well equipped with a fridge, microwave, toaster oven, and Keurig coffee pot. The AC was amazing. The Motel is conviently located at the quiet south end of town with a nice restaurant next door (within walking distance). Access to the beach was easy, and the pool was available and clean. Linens were changed out on our second day and offered for exchange each day. Parking was easy and convenient as well. My interaction with the office staff was pleasant and respectful when I did encounter them. The only drawback was the accessibility of electrical outlets and the location of them for phone charging. If the trip becomes an annual occurrence, I'll be making my reservation here again. Overall, a very nice stay. Rooms: The rooms were clean and well equipped. Nearby activities: Easy access to the main drag. Outlet shopping in close proximity. Thrift shopping easy to get to. Walkability: Within walking distance to the beach and shops. Food & drinks: Food and drink easily accessed from this location."

"All was good. Had 3 rooms and all were comfortable and served our beach trip well. But… King room had no where else to sit besides the bed and the stand up shower was a bit disappointing. "

"Great inn right across the street from the beach. They had a great breakfast (the vegan option wasn’t as good as the non-vegan option, but it was far from the worst food I’ve been served; it was a solid B). The proximity to great restaurants was also a big plus. The library, pool, and outdoor spaces were great amenities. The rooms were quite comfortable, and the porch was truly lovely."

"The last time I stayed at this small comfy little motel was the day that Prince Diana died. We arrived to that horrible news when we checked in. I was pregnant with my first baby, and the hotel management was super nice about my emotions being over the top. It was our 2nd time staying here and absolutely love it. I am so glad that she is still the same small comfy little motel that has stood through so many major hurricanes over the decades. I so miss Ocracoke! Hope to visit again soon. Safety: Rooms are very clean. Restaurants across the street and shops just down the road a little that you can walk to. Very safe and the motel staff was absolutely wonderful!"

"Absolutely FANTASTIC (affordable) option for the Outer Banks! Truly whoever set this hotel up is a master of hospitality, with a gift for knowing how to keep guests entertained, relaxed, and have everything they need ready for them. From bikes to beach chairs, to plenty of sitting areas and rocking chairs and swings, to beautifully maintained lawn and picnic areas for adults and kids alike, a beautiful private pool near the garden, and a wonderful way of doing breakfast where you automatically have a dining reservation on arrivals, or if you can’t make it they will give you a box to go. Besides the hotel, the staff is great. We arrived some early, so they let us change in their bathroom and use the private beach access while we waited. We also had to call the manager at 11pm to ask how to use the AC and she was so nice and forgiving and never made us feel like a bother. Truly, like staying in a family’s home. Such a wonderful stay and we highly recommend!"

"We had such an amazing time! Without hesitation, I would return to First Colony Inn on my next trip to Nags Head! I loved the historic charm of the grounds and building and the service and hospitality were awesome! The breakfast each morning was amazing and the wine and charcuterie each afternoon were the perfect touch! From the rockers on the porch to having beach chairs ready to go each morning, I was impressed! Don't change a thing! I have told everyone I know this is a hidden gem!"
